I thought I would just go ahead and post my top. It is still a mystery to my husband. I have tried to explain, but he just doesn't get it. LOL I guess only a quilter could appreciate it. Since he likes greens and browns, this will still probably be one of his favorites!

Pam's Woods Mystery - Rule 14 and 15

This one didn't turn out quite like I imagined it. With hindsight, I should have made the pinwheels with light and dark green instead of greens and blues. They are supposed to be tall trees! I appliqued the trunks with wool felt and embroidery thread.

There was only one rule for 15 and it was to use no pink. I told myself that would be easy because I am using browns and greens mostly. I was just about finished putting all the squares together when I realized that some of my browns had pink in them. I had good intentions. I actually made rules 14 and 15 alike. Below is a picture of them joined. Betty gave me one of her dimentional blocks from an earlier rule because she thought it looked like a tent. I appliqued the tent in the center of the trees where rules 14 and 15 are joined.

I really have enjoyed participating in this mystery. This was a good exercise in creativity and design and certainly took me outside my "quilting box." Everyone did a fabulous job with their mysteries. I am looking forward to seeing all of the finished designs.

Scarecrow 14 & 15

This will be the top of my quilt. I broke the rules on this one. I wanted to extend the tree from earlier clue so I did it the best I could. That meant changing the size of rules 14 & 15. I had found a vest at goodwill store so I wanted to use the scarecrows from it in the quilt somewhere but these scarecrows were pretty big. Part of the design was knitted right into the sweater and parts of it are appliqued on, so I had to cut around the entire design to use it in the quilt. I appliqued them each onto big pieces of flannel so that I could have one in each upper corner of the quilt. The blackbirds were here and there on the vest so I cut them off the sweater and put them in the tree. I had to laugh at myself because the whole time I was making the tree I was trying to think of something to put in it besides leaves. While I was cutting up the vest , I was thinking the extra birds are cute, I should find a place in the quilt for them.

Now I need to attach this section to the rest of the quilt and make some borders.

Bird Border

I have the border on! I found this cute striped fabric that is made to go with my other basic fabrics. Some of the flowers are exactly like the ones in the flower print, and the colors all match. I simply put the border on three sides and mitered the corners.

It's hard to get a really good shot that shows what it looks like in total, and the bed we have here is a Hollywood king, so it doesn't fit properly, but you get the idea. I will now put this quilt away until we get home in September and quilt it next winter. Meanwhile, I brought along another one that I can work on when I have the time. I'm hoping to see more of you come to conclusion this month!!

Well, here is my last block, exciting but sad too. I will miss these monthly blocks. Hope we are soon working on another project!

This is the final block. I see the chickadees are hard to see in the photo, but they show up better on the real block. Everything is needle-turn appliqued and machine embroidered.

I couldn't get a good, full shot of the last two blocks joined. They were just too wide to get the whole thing without making the photo too small to see the detail, so I have a shot from the middle. The full quilt is below.

Sorry, a chair is in front of the bottom left corner, but it is just a continuation of the bottom center, so you aren't missing anything. I have the fabric and a plan for the border and hope to get that done before long. Will post it then. It has been such fun working on this and getting acquainted with all of you guest quilters. What a wonderful experience!

Final Block!!

This block took a lot longer to put together than it looks. The pine tree print had 4 inch wolfs with the snow around and between them. I cut small pieces of the snow print and set them around the trees. Much of this was needle turn applique using a blind stitch. I also had to overlay and applique trees over the the top of others to cover parts of the wolves and the holes cut to remove the wolves. I enlarged the mountain from the pattern I used in block 14.

Below is 14 and 15 put together. I found the cloud print looking for something else, and it seemed a better match than what I used earlier, so I took the old clouds off and added these. I do like them better.

And here is all 15 blocks put together. It makes quite a picture.

It measures about 60 X 80. I hope to get the borders on tomorrow.

Pam's Wood Mystery rules 11,, 12 and 13

I am finally getting caught up. I only have two rules to go.

This is rule 11. I put two little heart shaped yoyo's at the bottom of two trees.

Rule 12 was the buggy barn technique and put words somewhere. I thought I would just put the name of my mystery in there.

Rule 13 was three tones of the same color. The only thing I could think of was to use the strip technique.

I ended up combining Rules 14 and 15 because of time constraints with student teaching starting soon (and the fact that I was behind on #14....lol). I haven't got a clue why the pic is sideways, but that's beside the point. The piano key border is one of my favorite things to use in bordering a quilt and there's no pink in the entire quilt. =) The hearts in the corners of the border are what remained of the teddy bear panel. I do admit to machine applique'ing them on because I didn't have time to do them otherwise. The only thing that didn't get in from Rule 14 was the pinwheel and that's because I could think of how to add one.

I'm not real happy with all the open background fabric in the bottom right, so I may end up adding something else there. But haven't decided on that.

I've had a great time working on the mystery this past year. It's been great fun to watch as everyone's quilt has unfolded. And if another one is done I'd love to take part again!

Rule Release #15

Hello again everyone!

Wow! We are actually releasing the last rule right behind our year mark.  I really did not expect to have a queen sized top this far done one year out. This is wonderful!

Rule: "No Pink."

The lady who submitted this rule always uses pink and wanted to be forced against it. Now, doesn't that sound like a simple rule to finish off with? It is simple for me because I don't really like pink.

Technique: Choose any technique you favor.   Perhaps there is one you tried this year that you wish to repeat.

Size: We are going to complete the row we began in December.  This row completion, once sewn to the TOP or BOTTOM of your quilt, will complete the quilt top -- yay! (minus borders).  Block #15 will need to be 30 1/2" wide ( 30" finished) by 22 1/2" tall (22 finished).

Once this row is completed in February, the quilt should measure 60 x 80 which will fit the top of a queen-sized bed.  You will have to make borders to get the quilt long enough to go over the sides of the bed.

Due Date: I think the "quilt top" without borders should be due Feb 29, 2012 -- LEAP DAY. I mean, we only have a due date such as this every four years, right. It will also allow us catcher-uppers to catch up.

I Used 3 shades of blue to frame a theme pieced of fabric.

Added the crow fabric under it so the block would be the right size.

Scarecrow rule 12

For the "buggy barn" technique I made the trees. Those were fun. So fun in fact that I decided to make a scarecrow Santa. That may have been easier if I were making a BIGGER one. But once I had a good start on this I continued even though the pieces were tiny to work with. His face is pink and hard to see with the white bg. I am going to put more details on the face and a pompom or button on the tip of his cap.

For the "words" part of the clue, as you can see, I used fabrics with words. The crow fabric has a sign that says, "When this you see, remember me" . I have been putting words here and there throughout the quilt already. So I thought fabrics with words would be fine here.

I really do love this project and I am sorry to have fallen behind. I hope to get up to date here pretty soon.

9 and 10 done - The Quilted Barn

I am finding some time to catch up -- yippee! I am only three behind now.

The first row was added to the bottom of the quilt. Different sized blocks that fit together are in the barn section while the orange flowers are 3D.

The very bottom row has the folded insert technique. I did it very simple by folding the green strip of fabric on the bottom right and catching the edges in the seam. I appliqued the fold down. The disappearing 9 patch is in the front of the lower red barn. I sewed the disappearing pieces together at random with no specific rhyme or reason.

Now I am off to making a bridge and horse/buggy to begin my column.

Oh, I finally got all of my itty bitty flowers attached to the fence between the two big trees. They are a bit busy, but I like it.

I also added three small trees below the "falling apart" old barn on the left.

Below is a close up of the two newest rows.

Below are closeups of the flowers. The whole flower section was made by putting fusible webbing on the back side of the fabric, fusing it to itself, and then cutting out the flowers. The front and back of the flowers are the same fabric. Most were attached with a French knot, but some I used invisible thread.

Autumn Courntry Rule 14 Release

Since this is the top, what better thing to add than the sky and the sun. Mountains in the background and of course, pine trees.

For the rule and technique, the sun is my pinwheel and it is needle turn appliqued behind the sky. I cut the circle and appliqued it by hand. From each seam of the pinwheel, I hand embroidered a sun ray. The mountains were fun to do. I have a pattern with one mountain with the snowcap, but it looked pretty lonely, so I added a couple more. For a block this size, it was a challenge to fill it in, and I may still add some more clouds.

Here is my Rule 14. I'm not sure I like it, but I need to let it sit for a while before I decide for sure. I may add something, perhaps a swallow with a third pinwheel in it's beak. I'm a little uncomfortable with all the open space, but I may decide I want to keep it and quilt a design in it. Any suggestions?

Hello again everyone! How is your Christmas readiness coming along? I am certain we all have our days and evenings filled with all sorts of goings-on.

As for the Dorinda Mystery, we are very close. The last rule release will come out in January and then we will have a top completed minus borders -- yeah!!

Rule: Make a pinwheel

Size: We are going to make half of a row this month and next month we'll make the other half to complete the quilt top (minus borders). This row will go on either the TOP or BOTTOM of the quilt. Block #14 will need to be 30 1/2" wide ( 30" finished) by 22 1/2" tall (22 finished).

Well here I am with Rule 12. It's another wall quilt. I searched out a real Buggy Barn pattern of butterflies. I wanted the top & bottom background to be the same color in all 3 blocks, though, so I altered it a bit. I love how it turned out.

I've just spent part of my Thanksgiving Day enjoying all the beautiful pictures you've been posting. You've made such wonderful quilts! I look forward to seeing how things finish. I've enjoyed learning to know some of Dorinda's descendants a little, too. What a terrific heritage!

I guess this will be my 2012 mystery, too! When I got involved in buying the house, I spent several months not stitching, and now I can't catch up with it all. I will work on that through 2012, though, and if the blog stays up, you will see the way I finish my Civil War version. I expect I'll leave out a few techniques that don't fit the era, but there will be a finish. I've really enjoyed this year's project, even though it's so completely not done.

Is there a plan for a 2012 project of some kind? I would love recreating an antique quilt with others of like mind.

Moira's Rule 13 Reveal

Yippee, I'm actually up-to-date with this one and that makes me happy, not to mention actually being able to quilt for a change, something that is rare at this point in grad school.

Since I'm working on my second quilt for this mystery I get to be creative with my measurements. So instead of adding another section to the quilt for this rule, I added to the previous section where I had put the words in order to use some of all the blank space that i had with the section.

I appliqued 22 balloons around the words. I used scraps for all of teh ballons (thereby "using it up" ;-) ) in yellows, oranges and reds. There are three different shades of each color.

Bird Rule 13 Reveal

I really enjoyed this one. I chose to use a stack and whack to create a peacock tail. The body of the peacock, the blues in the tail, and the sky in the background are my three values of the same color.

I put this block on the top of my column, and here is how that turned out.

When I went to put this column on the side of the quilt, it didn't fit. It was two inches short. I have no idea where I messed up, but I had to make it work, so I sewed another strip of the stripe across the top. I would have done more of the sky, but I didn't have enough fabric to get a full strip across the top without a seam in it, and I thought that would look worse than using the stripe, so here is the whole quilt as adjusted.

Autumn Country Rule 13 Reveal

This was a fun rule, and since I was working with a whole panel, finishing off the bottom with the D9P was just the natural thing to do. The fabric I got for the trees was different shades of the yellow/gold so that fit the rule perfectly. I was up all night Tuesday night, with something else, so spent the time at the sewing machine and nearly finished the block during the night. I had to find a button similar to those I used on the previous yo-yo trees, so I could not complete it until I got the button.
I did take a picture of just rule 13, but for some reason I can't get the computer to add another picture, so you will just have to look at the entire panel.

Here is the entire top to this point. The yellow background really stands out in this picture. Those of you who have seen the fabric know how gorgeous it is.
The next panel will have to go on the top, so I hope the rule is something I can add to my "picture". Otherwise, it will be hard to finish off.

I have Autumn Leaves fabric for my outer panels, so that will tie everything together. I am excited that we are this close to being finished! It has been a really fun project.

Marie's Optical Illusion Rule #11

Yippee, I finally finished Rule 11, and have hopes of catching up soon. This rule required at least one yo-yo. This was another new technique for me--I've never made a yo-yo before. I was only going to make one and put it in the center block, but it was so much fun I decided that each block needed a yo-yo. I think I finally got the right color combination for the shadows this time, but I'm not going to change the star blocks.

We are getting very close. The quilt should now fit on the top of a queen-sized bed. We'll need to add borders to hang over the sides.

Marie's Optical Illusion Rule #10

I'm so happy to finish another rule. Now I'm only 2 months behind! Rule #10 is 4 disappearing 9 patches. The technique was to use a folded insert. I've never made d9p before, and they were really fun. I combined the folded insert with the d9p's.

I really had fun making this (faux) cathedral windows block.

I don't know what to call this block. It's rather different, but it is a d9p and it has fabric folds.

I used folded pinwheels in my last rule, and decided to put some in this one too.

Here are my 4 d9p pieced together. The hearts aren't folded, but they fit my optical illusion theme.

I added the 3-d continuous triangles because I thought I needed more optical illusions.

Here is the whole quilt, just waiting for me to finish the next rules.

Marie's Optical Illusion Rule #9

I finally have finished Rule 9. I'm still way behind, but at least I'm making some progress. This rule called for different sized blocks that fit together. I used this rule to make my star. The technique was something 3D that actually sticks up on the quilt. My pinwheels in the center of the stars are 3D. To make the rule fit my theme of optical illusions, I added a shadow to the star. I wish I would have made the shadow a little darker, but I'm not going to do it over!

I hope to get Rule 10 completed before Rule 13 comes out in a week, and then hopefully I'll get the rest caught up before the end of the year.

She made half yo-yo's on the silos. She paper peiced the yellow house. To follow the Buggy Bard pattern, she created a tractor. She also wrote 2011 on the silo by embroiding.

Yippee - I am finally caught up with the rules that have been posted and have everything done. For the remainder of rule 12 I made wonky 16 patch blocks. I made three different pairs of 8" finished blocks. Put five of them together and it fit perfectly across the width at the top of the quilt - serendipity because I didn't measure before hand, lol. Did these wonky blocks freehand and had fun with them. May use this idea to use up some fabrics that were from an online friends stash when she passed away. quick and easy - just my type of blocks. =)

Still thinking about what to add to the one section, but am getting closer to making a decision. At the moment am thinking of adding balloons in and around the lettering, with the strings going down through and around the lettering and the basket.

Rule 11, and a start on Rule 12 - Use It Up #2

I've finished my version of Rule 11 and have added it to the quilt top. The section is 14 inches wide and runs the full length of the top as it is right now. The words were created through Word - at 300 pt font. Basket was paper-pieced and I used yo-yo's as flowers in the basket. Scraps were used to make the basket, letters, and yo-yo's. I used buttons to hold the yo-yo's on. I'm thinking about what to add to the section so that there isn't so much "empty" space above and below the words. Might take a while to decide what to add.

Next up is Rule 12.....time will tell how fast I get it done. And as I look at the instructions I see that i've already got part of Rule 12 included in this section....oops....that's what I get for not double-checking them before I make something. Not gonna change it tho.............way too much work for that. So all I need to finish up for Rule 12 is to make the buggy barn style wonky blocks. I can handle that....lol.

Bird Rule 12 Reveal

I'm still here!!! I have found that, even though my time is very limited, I still have time to do a block a month. So here is my wonky penguin. This was a tough rule for me. I learned the hard way that buggy barn doesn't work well with curves! I added the eye, the beak, and the feet later. I am placing this block at the bottom right-hand corner, so I put the words in to identify the whole quilt. Unfortunately, the whole block looks a little wonky in this picture. I had planned to do the positive negative thing, but the size wouldn't work, and the second block didn't want to go together, so I am just including the positive piece.

Here is the penguin block added to the owl block. Can't wait to add the last block to the top of this strip and sew it to the side of the quilt.

Rule 10 - Use It Up #2, and "Use It Up #1" top

I've actually managed to get some quilting time in these last few days....woohoo! Should have been working on homework or the commissioned sewing, but needed the quilting time for me. =)

At any rate, since I had decided that the pastel quilt was big enough for what I wanted to do with it, I stayed with my theme and started working on "Use It Up" quilt #2. =) This quilt top is starting with a pair of pillow panels that I've had in the stash for at least 10 years. I'd planned on using them for a baby quilt....so I figure by following the remaining rules, with the exception of maybe the posted sizes for the sections, I should have another nice baby quilt at the end of this mystery.

I've finished Rule 10 - because of teh size of the pillow panels, I was only able to get 3 of teh disappearing 9 patch blocks in the quilt on the left side of the quilt. Had goofed up on my cutting so the 4th block didn't turn out anyway. I added the folded insert blocks along the bottom of the top in progress. Now onto Rule 11. =)

Meanwhile, I've also managed to get a border onto the pastel quilt and that top is now finished. Eventually it'll get quilted whenever I next need a baby quilt for a girl.

Ann's Autumn Country Rule Release 12

This was a fun rule. The Buggy Barn designing was partly from my imagination and part from what was posted in the rule release. I trimmed the house blocks to 6 1/2 inches and the trees to 5 1/2 inches. The top house overlaps to block 11.

Country Holiday Traditions

I can say one thing about this Mystery quilt....it truly is just that, a mystery that unfolds and leads down different paths with each new rule and technique. I have been playing catch up, but I can tell you that this project hasn't turned out like anything I had envisioned in the beginning.

Here are my rules #9 and #10. Number 9 was to add something 3D, if you look close the wings on my chickens are 3D. Number 10 is a disappearing nine patch and a folded insert. My sunflower garden is the nine patch and the leaves are my folded inserts. The leaves are beginning of my fall holiday traditions.

I knew at the start of the quilt, I wanted to have the holiday traditions surrounding a home, but I didn't anticipate all that I've added around the home. This project has really stretched me. I'm loving all I'm learning. It is a simple, but the disappearing nine patch was fun to do. I like the possibilities that can be done with it.

Rule Release #12

Before we get to the rule, let me just say that everyone in the group voted to use the rules that already exist from active and inactive participants. This rule comes from the original pool of rules submitted.

RULE 12

Rule: put words in it somewhere

Technique: I am calling this technique the "Buggy Barn" technique. The idea comes from the way Buggy Barn patterned quilts are made. You may use a real Buggy Barn pattern if you choose, but it would be a learning experience to try to make your own.

Follow the steps below:

1. Draw a basic pattern of what you want to make. Don't do anything too detailed and remember that it will SHRINK dramatically after it is sewn together. Create "sections" that must be sewn together before they can be joined to other sections. I like to label my sections as letters and the pieces in that section are listed in order by number. The photo below shows that there will be 7 sections (A-G).

Below is a sample of a wonky churn dash I drew.

2. Draw or trace your pattern onto freezer paper.

3. Stack at least two contrasting fabrics with right sides up. Place the freezer paper pattern on top and press it to the top fabric. The waxy side will stick to the top fabric and hold it in place while you cut. Don't be concerned with leaving the outside edges large. It will give you room to true up the block when you are finished.

4. Cut along the lines between the main sections as shown below.

5. Cut out the remaining sections after the main cuts are complete. Once your sections are cut you can cut out each individual piece.

6. Trade the position the two different fabrics to form the block pattern. Sew the pieces together by section in order of number. As you sew them back together REMEMBER THAT BUGGY BARNS ARE NOT EXACT. You WILL HAVE TO trim the edge of each piece before you attach it to the next one. The Buggy Barn style is always wonky and rarely fits together perfectly.

7. If you started with two fabrics, you will end up with 2 separate blocks that are positive negative blocks.

Here is another example to look at. This one will be a wonky house.

When I finished, my house looked like this. Because the patterns don't always turn out like you think they will, I had to make some simple adjustmens. My chimney was too tall so I added another piece of background to go across the top of it. Also, my door was the same color as my background, so I added a piece below it to make the door stand out. See the difference below.

Lyn's Small Town Winter

I am posting this for her as she doesn't do blogger. Lyn has completed and added rules 8, 9 & 10.

Rule 8 is the block with the yellow house, brown tree, and rock piller fence posts placed in the lower right.

Rule 9 features more of the lake, the mountain behind it, pine trees, and embroidery work so show more backgrouond hills. For the 3-D portion of the rule she added black colored birds flying above the pine tree on the right.

On rule 10 she tried to do the disappearing 9 patch in the sky and then changed it because it looked too boxy for clouds and sky. She did the folded inserts on her clouds. They are difficult to tell that they are folded inserts because she did such a fine job of stitching down the fold, but they are the long skinny clouds. Don't they look great and oh so clever?

Granny Annie's Garden Rules 10 & 11

I'm going to pull a fast one here. I'm trying to catch up & since I'm doing wallhangings instead of the quilt I'm combining Rules 10 & 11. The 2 sides are my 4 disappearing 9 patches. I made one folded insert flower. The rest is yo- yos & raw edge applique. The yo-yos were such fun but I don't think there's a cathedral window anywhere in my future - but I'm glad I at least tried a folded insert.

Autumn Country Rule 11 Reveal

I am about 2 weeks behind in my sewing. Life has gotten in the way of fun. Other priorities have taken up my sewing time. But it is all good. Now I have my other 2 projects to catch up before our next release.
The Yo-yo's were really fun and I plan to add 1 or 2 more later. The button in the center holds the yo-yo in place, so the fabric is free. This is a new trick for me. The tree on the left will overlap onto the last column on the right side.
This is also the end of the river and the road. We will see where it goes on the left side of the quilt. It may end where it is, or another column may be added to balance. We shall see.

Scarecrow rule 11

Here is rule 11 with 2 yoyo's. For the scarecrow I cut the fabric picture out of a panel. One of those printed panels that was for making a stuffed scarecrow. They had a picture on there to show how it should look when you assemble all the parts. I thought it was nice that it had the word 'scarecrow' right above his head.
This was just too easy so I put extra batting behind the scarecrow part and tried to trapunto it. I watched a video on youtube. It didn't come out as well as some I have seen already done. Maybe I should have used more batting or thicker batting. Yes , this block is quilted. I am doing the whole quilt qayg. ( I still need to quilt row 10 and attach it to quilt then I will be up to date!

Rule 9 finished!

Finally got to quilt and do something for me.....probably should have been doing homework, but decided to play "hooky" for a few hrs and get rule 9 completed and added to my quilt top. Made three 3D pinwheels and used buttons to embellish the blocks.

Now the only problem is, that the quilt top is about the size I typically give as baby quilts, and that is what I had planned to do with this quilt at some point. But I know that there are still more steps coming.....not to mention the two that I'm behind on at this point. I'm thinking I'd like to stop adding to this one at this point, with the exception of a border. But then take the remaining steps and start working on with them to make another quilt. I hope that's ok with everyone!

Meanwhile here are a couple of pics of the panel that I added, and the quilt top as it is now. =)

Scarecrow rule 10

I have put rule 10 together. I made the D9P small. I started with 2" squares so that 4 blocks would fit into the 9.5" area. Of course that was a little bit too small so I just added borders around it. I am getting so I can make things fit! lol. The d9p blocks are to the right and next to it is my folded insert. That is the block made entirely with folded fabrics and sewn around the edges of the block to hold it all together. Yes, the edges are kinda thick. I had a piece of the curved pieced strip left over from a previous rule so I machine embroidered a scarecrow on it and made good use of it. The other two blocks have machine embroider/applique scarecrows and the fence is also embroidered. Near the middle is fussy cut (2 pieces) of fabric sewn together. Next thing I need to do is sew it to the quilt and get busy on #11.

Bird Rule 11 Reveal

Well, ladies, here his my rule 11 reveal. Good thing it was scheduled today as I will be without my computer for a couple of weeks. This one is kind of funky but fun.
Whooo can tell what my bird is? The center of the eyes are buttons. The needles on the tree, the texture of the bark, and the beak and feet are machine embroidery.

For rule 9 I put together 2" and 4" blocks. The 4" blocks have little scarecrows from the wizard of oz in the fabric. For the 3D technique I made sunflowers. Two of them are yoyo's . Two of them are made with the new Kanzashi flower makers from Clover. One is a folded yoyo technique that I followed a tutorial on a blog. Each flower is attached to the block with a button. The scarecrows are simply a piece of printed fabric that I cut to fit the remainder of this row.

Here it is sewn to the first 8 sections. All sandwiched and quilted up to this point!

I have finished rules 7 & 8 and also have sewn them to the previous sections. I have pretty good starts on 9 & 10 so , hopefully will have them ready in the near future. The scarecrow in rule 8 is paper pieced. I had the fabric with the scene of sky and house so I wanted to use it as bg. I continued the tree from the previous block that was on the left. Lots of summer sunshine! The tree trunk is pieced with the bg fabric and the branch is applique. Bird is fussy cut. The illusion block is kinda big and sits out in the middle of nowhere. lol.

Finally finished Rule 9. Not doing a quilt so made a "banner" for over my living room picture window. It measures 96 x 12 inches (no wonder it took me so long). Too wide to get a picture of the whole thing so here is the right & left sides plus a closeup of one of the blocks. The center block is the multi sized blocks - there are 2, 3, 4 & 6 inchers put together to equal the 12 inch.

I thought I would take an inventory today of the rules submitted and who conjured them up. I did have a purpose in delaying the reveal of the rule authors. Some rules were a challenge and I thought it better to reveal who submitted them after they were finished and the cussing was over (ha ha).

(I used Tamera's rule that month and the paper-pieced technique was used in release #8)

Ok, so here is the big question for all of you! I believe that all "active" participants have had their submission used. I still have plenty of rules left to use because several of you submitted more than one, and 6 inactive participants submitted rules that have not been used as of yet.

1) I can just draw from the remaining submitted EXTRA rules of active participants only.
2) I can draw from all the remaining rules including the 6 inactive participants.
3) ALL active only participants can submit new rules to use in the remaining drawings knowing that only 3-5 will be selected.
4) We can allow Dorine, Moira, and Stephanie, (and Lyn's "winter" because she never submitted a rule),
and Sherrie if she makes another appearance (she started late) to submit new rules BECAUSE they are all still active participants and they submitted "techniques" according to my classifiation rather than "rules". They didn't really get the exposure they deserved. They were also duplicates of each other: applique, paper-pieced, and embroidery. This choice means I will ONLY draw from these 4 ladies' new submissions.

Please email me, Deana, at atticw@hotmail.com with your choice selection. Please just indicate a # 1-4. Majority will prevail. I will accept your votes up until October 1st.

HOW MUCH LONGER? I anticipate that we still have 3-5 more rules. I plan to complete the column we just started and break up the last row into 2-3 releases. Many of us are trying to catch up, so I don't really want to do LARGE sections at a time. Smaller is easier and looks more appealing. I plan to get the quilt to queen-sized/top of the bed ready. You can then add borders to make the quilt drape down over the sides. I have decided to NOT use rules and techniques to complete the quilt borders. I would like to, however, complete the borders together with 2 week goals or something to encourage us all to complete this project. My borders will take some time because I will be piecing or appliqueing them -- all four sides different from each other. I know that some others in the group intend to do fancy borders that will take some extra time as well.

SOOOO, will we finish this year? I think not, but early next year.

One member has inquired as to whether we will do it again next year. Please email, comment, or post your comments regarding this idea. If we are going to do it again, I want to start early (Feb) and advertise early (Dec/Jan) because women get more excited about a new project with a new year.

Size: We are going to build another column to go on either side of the quilt. Block #11 will need to be 17 1/2" wide ( 17" finished) by 20 1/2" tall (20 finished). This should bring the quilt width to the right size to fit on top of a queen-sized bed.

Due Dates: The next rule will release October 8th. You can begin showing a full release of #11 on Sept 17th.

I guess I should give you a quick personal update first...

This summer was loads of crazy crazy moving around and fun and LOADS of frustration, and obviously, I was WAY too busy to do my quilting, plus, I did not have electricity anyway. Then, I moved in to my new dorm. Wow, college is crazy! And... I didn't bring up my sewing machine at first, and then I worked all Labor day to get stuff done, and only finished one block.

Also, I am using some of my mom's scraps... meaning, it would be a challenge to fit bins of scraps in my little apartment... so I don't get to do anymore until fall break. But it's okay, because I wanted a lap-size quilt, and when I get to do #10, it will make it the size I want it. So I will be done then anyway, unless I REALLY want to try the #11 rule... hehe, that might be a temptation. Anyhow, here is my block!

It is my, VERY artistic rendition of my most favorite view in the world. (From the camp I work at over the summers)

So, here is a close up on the water...

I made the reflection as part of the block, and then I applique'd on some blue organza, and tacked it down with the ripples. I am rather pleased with the effect.

And those bow-tie blocks? Those are 3-D. I am not a huge fan of things sticking out of my quilt, so I did some research and found this pattern, and it is SO much easier than a regular bow-tie block!

Well, there you are! I am getting closer to being caught up!

Deana's Barn Rule 8

Here is a close up of rule #8 attached to rule #7. It is hard to see where I seemed them together.

I paper pieced the warn out, thread bear barn for the paper piecing technique. I added yellow and a flower -- the yellow field and another sunflower.

Here is a photo of everything that is finished up to this point. This is the first I've shown the fence, birdhouse, and trees completed in rule 6. As a reminder, rule 6 asked for free hand curved piecing and a house. I built a birdhouse and curved pieced the ground.

Below is what I hope the fence/birdhouse section will look like when it is finished. I want to add all the flowers in a way similar to the photo below.

Birds Rule 10 Reveal

Here is my finished rule 10. I loved working with the D9P. I'd never seen that technique before and think I may well use it on my next baby quilt. It's amazing how simple and yet beautiful it is. I did my whole block with it and used four and a half 9 patches. I made my folded insert an integral part of the 9 patch and created abstract flying birds from that. I really like the outcome.

I added the finished block to the bottom of the quilt and really like the way it looks. I still need to do something on the right side to balance out the dark blocks on the left, but I'm sure something will come up that works for that. Can't wait for the next rule.

Reveal Day!

This has been a really fun rule. The D9P's are a fun and easy way to take up space. I used many of my scraps, sew it is really scrappy. I put 2 sets on each side of my "windows"

The quilt is getting so big that it is hard to get a good close-up view, but you can see that it does not follow what I have been doing with a scene. I think this will be the bottom of the quilt, so it does not need to be scenery.
It is definitely bright and "autumny".

I used 5" squares to make the 4 D9P. When I cut them apart, they made a nice row across the top. Those 9-patches definitely disappeared! I just realized that it didn't work as well as I thought. In reality, I only used 2 9-patches. I still have two 9-patches cut but left over. Oh well.....I DID try! LOL

This is for the "folded insert" technique. The only stitching in the block is around the edges. The fabrics are all folded and stacked then stitched in place around the edge of the block. I will put more pictures later.

This is what I have so far. I still need to do Rule 10. I am a little behind. It is getting harder to take a picture. Our project is getting quite large. I like the way it looks on my bed so far. I need to get a design wall so I can have a way to take large pictures.

Well I managed to get the top for my sample quilt finished while on vacation. Had hoped for more than that, but ended up picking up some freelance technical writing as well and ended up putting in a lot of work on that (Still working on it as a matter of fact). And since I've been home have been working hard on the commissioned sewing that i've got piled up here and finishing up the technical writing.

Do have an idea of what I want to do, just haven't had time to actually draw it up.....and then make it. Meanwhile I have to get the sample quilt I made from the block pattern that is being published onto the frame so I can get get it quilted and bound before the end of the month. Not to mention getting ready for grad school which starts again on Monday.

Have enjoyed looking at everyone else's work tho!

....just super busy! Haven't picked my Scrappy Anything in a while due to a wonderful beachy vacation to Cape Cod, MA and school summer vacation with the kids. I am now potty training my 3 year old DS so that comsumes much of my free time, and time that I should be doing other things!

I am reading the blog, the rules and can't wait to get going again. Haven't really been sewing this summer and am super anxious to get back to it.

School begins soon for both kids and then we'll fall back into a goo routine again, and that will absolutely include some creative time for Mom.

RULE: Make four disappearing 9 patches
What is a D9P? Here are some links to help you:

TECHNIQUE: Use a folded insert technique. See explanation at the very bottom of this post.

SIZE: At this point our quilts should measure 43-1/2" wide and 49-1/2" tall. Block # 10 should be 9" finished (9-1/2" unfinished) tall and fit the full width of the quilt (43-1/2" wide). We will place it on the top or bottom of the quilt. This should help in getting it rectangular shaped for the top of a bed.

When the block is finished post a picture of the block, then sew it to the top or bottom of your quilt and post a picture of the whole quilt.

DUE DATE: We will have one month to complete this block. You may begin posting teasers Aug 15, and the full release can be posted on Sept 1st. The next rule will be released September 8.

Deana's Folded Insert Technique Tutorial

Basically a folded insert is a technique where you fold the fabric and catch the raw unfolded edges in a seam. The folded edge can then be curved back for great new look. You can jazz up any traditional block that has a half square triangle in it with this technique. Here is how.

I began by cutting squares - any size works.

Next I folded my "inserts" in half to form a pressed triangle.

Next I placed them on top of squares of the same size and sewed the block together catching the raw edges of the folded insert in the seams.

The next step is to curve back the folded part and hand or machine stitch it down. (Mine are just pinned for demonstration).

This gives the half square triangle a nice curved look.
If you place two folded triangles over one square, you can create a beautiful oval opening like the one shown in the photo below.

Here are some pictures of other blocks that are made with this technique. Note that they are simple traditional blocks with half square triangles in them.

There are many many other ways to use this technique that do not use half square tringles. Someone could use a folded insert to make a beak or wing on a bird, a window on a house, the sky is the limit!!Some other ways to use this technique are demonstrated in the links below.

Dorine's Rule #9

Hurray!! It's reveal day! As you probably all guessed, my theme for Rule 9 is chickens. I actually did a rooster, a hen, eggs, and baby chicks. Here is the complete block, but it had to be so small to fit it all in, that I did pictures of the individual sections as well.

Here is the hen. I put the ruler in so you could see the 3D parts. The legs are machine embroidered, and the body is needle turn applique. The comb is simply fabric folder over and gathered. I sewed it on first then appliqued the head over it.

I did the rooster in basically the same way except the tail feathers instead of a wing are 3D. The 3D parts are all self lined, and the under side of each is machine stitched to the background fabric so no raw edges are exposed.
This is my section where two smaller blocks are joined to the larger blocks. No 3D in this section.
And here is the whole quilt put together. I had great fun with this block. I'm really glad I chose this theme. It has been really fun finding ways to use it with the different rules and techniques.

Here we go with Rule #9

The windmill is my 3-D portion. The teaser shows it better than the whole block, because it is zoomed in better. The top of the windmill is a separate, small block, and the base is a larger block, so they fit together by adding to the sides of the top block.

This was really fun, and a challenge for me, as I have never done this type of 3-D before. I knew what I wanted to do, but doing it was harder than I thought it would be. I think the circle was what made it more difficult.
This is not what I had in mind when I started the block, but it took a life of it's own, and I like how it turned out.
As you look at the blocks all together, you can see that I added more to this rule when I put it together with the rest of the blocks. The pond just did not look right, so I added some rocks along the top, and took away the stark line.

If you can't zoom in enough to read it, the hexie has embroidered around it "Daughters of Dorinda Mystery 2011 The colors of Autumn in the Country.

Also, this weekend we are doing our "Sisters Get Together". Marie, Dorine, and I are getting together (and bringing our husbands too) and I am so excited. I too am MIA. After living in the same house for 33 years my husband and I decided it was time to downsize a little and move to a new house. Wow, what a job! We are in our new home now, and I have a sewing room, but everything in it is still in boxes. I'm also missing in action for this latest rule........but will get caught up at some point......lol.... Summer school has been brutal for me, but it's almost over now thankfully. Am getting ready to head to Phoenix for a couple weeks of vacation....so looking forward to that. While out there will be doing some sewing that I must get done. Have to get a quilt sample made using a block that I designed and that has been accepted for publication in the Fall 2011 issue of QuiltMaker's 100 Blocks magazine. =) Hadn't had time to make anything with it because of school, and now I need something finished before the first of September.....lol. Am also working on the next block I plan to submit for publication.....got it drawn up (actually have two of them drawn up....) but need to get the sample block made. =)

Yes, I'm missing in action, but don't count me down yet. Between buying a house (closing in August, no date yet) and my "part-time" job becoming almost full-time (and I'll be quitting at the end of August!), I have NO time. I have things printed out to put on the book shelf, and that was what step? I'm not sure, but I have 6 pieces hanging on the wall, and it's the unfinished one of them. LOL. I WILL get back to it - probably in September, and work on catching up - that and everything else!

In the meantime, it looks nice on the design wall.

Caught up finally!

Well, I am finally all caught up and ready to start on rule #9. I had to re-think my quilt plans so that took me the most time. I think I'm now on track again with where I plan to go with it. I think my most challenging was the curved piecing. As you can see my river isn't very curvey.

The camp that I am currently working at, closes for the week of the fourth, so I was able to get my block done, on time! I must admit I am not a big fan of paper piecing. I find it a royal pain. Maybe it was the pattern I chose... Anyhow, here is the block!

Again, it is sideways. The border fabric is really, really bright, but it was the only yellow that did not involve dinosaurs or fish in mom's cupboard of scraps. So, I will have to put it elsewhere in the future to make it less striking. Here is a close up on those trees...

I am not a huge fan of how it turned out. Plus, I discovered that somehow, when I squared off the last block, I made it almost an inch too skinny, so I will have to put something on that side to make the quilt up to size.

RULE RELEASE 9

It's time for our Rule Release 9, so here we go:

RULE: Use different sized blocks that fit together. For instance, use a 4" finished block and 2" finished blocks as their measurements fit together easily.

TECHNIQUE: Something 3D - it actually has to stick up on the quilt like flower petals or embellishments. (This won't be a flat 3D like we did before.)

SIZE: At this point our quilt should measure 37-1/2" tall and 43-1/2" wide. Block # 9 will go on the top or the bottom of the quilt. This block will be the width of the quilt and 12 inches tall finished, so the unfinished block will be 43-1/2" wide and 12-1/2" tall.

When the block is finished post a picture of the block, then sew it to the top or bottom of your quilt and post a picture of the whole quilt.

DUE DATE: We will have one month to complete this block. You may begin posting teasers July 18, and the full release can be posted August 1st. The next rule will be released August 8.

Granny Annie's Garden (Wallhanging), Rule 8

I love paperpiecing so this was a fun rule. I need to admit I cheated just a little - this was a UFO sitting in my closet - I already had the tulip made. But it has a yellow daffodil & was so fun to make. Will be great on my wall come next Spring or maybe as a tablerunner. Can't wait to see what rule 9 brings.

Moira's Rule 8

Woohoo, blogger finally let me upload a pic for my post....past two days it has been cranky and wouldn't let me do it. And it even put my picture in right side up for a change instead of sideways.

At any rate, while I didn't use yellow in my block - I did design the pp'ing patterns for the three tulips that I made for this rule. I put the combined sections for rule 7 and 8 on the right side of the quilt top in order to balance it out. I love how it is turning out so far! But now I don't know who will eventually get it because i've finished off all the baby quilts that I needed to make for gifts this summer. Eventually tho it will be a gift. =)

The day is finally here! Woohoo! Here is my paper pieced eagle. Note the yellow beak. The bottom of the block actually has two small eagles flying around in the background and seemed the perfect backdrop for an eagle. The colors don't blend as well with the top part as I would like, but I think it blends in with the rest of the quilt. I had been waiting and waiting for the perfect rule and dimensions for this pattern. So glad to get to use it at last!
And here is the whole quilt. It is getting big!

And here is my Rule #8 block:

The three flower blocks are paper pieced, and picking flower patterns met the rule criteria. I also added yellow in the flowers and the skinny border. It brighten up everything and tied in well to the rest of my quilt top.

Ann's Autumn Country Rule 8

And so Rule 8 is complete. The paper pieced cow came from a website that was in Dutch, and it is put together in sections, which is something I have not done before. My background is yellow, but the sunflowers are too, so all the rules and techniques are taken care of. I was going to put a fence around the cow, but there is just not enough room to do what I had in mind. I may go back later and add something else.
Rules 7 and 8 together.
And the whole picture -er- I mean quilt. It is getting pretty big now.

You can see that I have done some overlapping and added some embroidery to my hexagon. The next part to the bottom will have something on the bottom of the hexie.

Marie's Optical Illusion Rule 8

This block is quite different from my others. The 3-d doesn't show up as much as I had hoped--I think because I didn't have enough contrast between my two yellows. The whole block turned out much different than I thought it would. I didn't like it when I was finishing it, but when I stood back and looked at it I liked it a lot better. I found the pattern at piecebynumber.com and it is called "arabesque".

When I put 4 blocks together and made the center, it was really cool, but since it couldn't be a square block I had to add more to the top and bottom of the block. (The picture ended up sideways when I posted it.) It didn't work to put another set of four blocks because it made the block a little too tall and there was no focal point to the block so I had to get creative to finish it to the size it needs to be. It's a little strange, but it surely would be a beautiful quilt if it was in multiples of 4 blocks. Maybe I'll try it some time.

I love paper piecing because it is so accurate and neat. I thought it was a fun rule.

I was surprised to see how much larger my quilt is when I put it all together. We're really making progress, and I'm having great fun with this!

Rule 7 doesn't look too dimensional, but it is the tumbling block pattern.

Rule 8 doesn't look too much like a treet to me but it is actually paper-pieced using the Weeping Willow paperpieced pattern from Quilters' Cache by Marcia Hohn.

I am having a little trouble posting. I hope it goes through this time. This mystery has really been a challenge for me, but I have really enjoyed participating in it and looking at everyone's themes and interpretations of the rules. I am also looking forward to seeing everyone's finish and hope we can do this again next year.

So, over the summers I work at a scout camp in the high uinta mountains, and we have been delayed a bit because of the snow at my camp. It's still impossible to get there. But, one of the other council camps has decided to hire me temporarily, until we can get into my camp. So, I might be gone as early as Thursday. This means that I will be gone from Sunday evenings, to Saturdays around noon for the next 2 months. So, I will obviously fall behind. I am just letting you know that I am safe and sound, just having adventures of my own. So, I will try to get rule number 8 done in the next two days, and set my reveal post to automatically post after the reveal date so you can all se it if I finish.

I have been slow because I just inherited my grandmother's husqvarna Viking machine, and I have not learned to use it yet. Plus, I haven't found a 1/4" foot. So I will have to use mom's machine again.

Here is my second teaser. The program refuses to rotate the picture even though I rotated it in my picture program. Go figure. The paper pieced section of the block was 12x12", so I add this to hopefully look like a bird's eye view from the bird pieced above it. I was going to do flowers, but when I found this fabric, I just couldn't resist it. I used the color yellow instead!!

I really had a lot of trouble with my pieced curves. I was finally able to get it look ok. There are a little puckers but they will quilt out. I may cover them with trees or something. The rest of you seemed to do so well with yours.

I finally sewed it to the other rules and now I can move on to rule 7. Yippeeeee.

My problems were solved simply by unchecking the "stay logged in" or "remember me" box when signing in. Then I rebooted & no problems since.

Autumn Country Teaser Rule 8

I found this paper piecing pattern on the internet. It was in Dutch, and I was able to translate the posting, but the instructions were a PDF that would not translate. (Guess I need Stephanie's Dad to look at it for me). This was an interesting piece to work on, as it is in 5 sections, which are sewn together after each section (or mold as it was called on the site). You see here parts of 4 of the sections. I don't remember the site, so will have to search for it again, as there were some other patterns that looked interesting to add later.
